Discovering MENA and other thoughts

A year ago I wrote a piece on Lebanon's political mess that focused on how the country was still functioning - to say the least - without a proper government in place. Four months ago and countless rounds of negotiations afterwards, the state finally got itself a new Prime Minister - the Sunni leader Tammam Salam- and a  new cabinet. The new government of national interest's first task was to issue a much-awaited   ministerial statement , vitally agreeing on its responsibility to preserve Lebanon’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity through all legitimate means and affirming the right of Lebanese citizens to resist Israeli occupation, respond to Israeli aggression and liberate Lebanese occupied territories. This allowed the Parliament to grant a confidence that would guarantee immunity in the event of a void in the Presidency.  A wise move, for everybody knew that was not unlikely to happen.  

Unas elecciones que tuvieron lugar el 25 de mayo representaron una aplastante victoria para Europa. Y no, no se trata de las elecciones al Parlamento Europeo, sino de la primera vuelta de las  elecciones presidenciales en Ucrania  en las que Petro Poroshenko, sin duda el candidato más pro  establishment , se declaró vencedor al haber recibido el apoyo de más del 55 por ciento de la población del país.

Siria celebrará elecciones presidenciales el próximo 3 de junio , y el país dio por inaugurada oficialmente su campaña electoral el domingo 11 de mayo. Las ciudades y pueblos bajo el control del régimen están hoy repletos de carteles y pósters desde los que observa con una media sonrisa el retrato del presidente Bashar Al- Assad. Unos, como los que cuelgan en Thawra Street, en el centro de la capital, muestran al Presidente vestido con un traje gris y una camisa azul, otros representan simplemente la bandera siria, en todos destaca la palabra ” juntos” y la firma del Presidente.
